Shugo Daimyō

守護大名の一覧

Shugo daimyō originated from shugo, or military governors, who were appointed by the Muromachi bakufu to fulfill the military needs for each province.  Those shugo who exercised unitary control over their respective provinces economically as well as militarily became shugo daimyō, while those whose territorial authority extended beyond their home base to encompass additional provinces rose to become sengoku daimyō

Following is an index of the shugo daimyō from the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods.  Individuals with the rank of sengoku daimyō or daimyō are covered under separate tabs.
