Shigenari served two generations of lords, Matsudaira Hirotada and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Shigenari and his older brother, Aoyama Tadakado, served in the Battle of Azukizaka (1542 to 1548) and the Battle of Okehazama in 1560.

In 1563, Shigenari, together with Tadakado, served valorously in pacification efforts during the Mikawa Ikkō-ikki.
