Saionji Kintaka

Saionji Clan

Iyo Province

Saionji Kintaka served as a bushō during the Sengoku period.  The Saionji clan were sengoku daimyō in Iyo Province.  Born in 1538, Kintaka was the lineal heir of Saionji Sanemitsu, a daimyō and the head of the clan.

The Saionji engaged in battle against the rival Iyo-Utsunomiya clan for territory.  In the autumn of 1556, Kintaka received notice from Jōkō Mitsuyatsu, the chamberlain from his castle, whereupon he quickly rushed back from his falconry site to launch an attack on Asuka Castle, fighting valiantly with a spear against soldiers under the command of Utsunomiya Toyotsuna.  Nevertheless, Kintaka died in battle after being shot with an arrow.  He was nineteen years old.  As a result, a nephew of Saionji Sanemitsu named Saionji Kinhiro became the designated successor to the Iyo-Saionji family.
