Rusu Kunimune served as a bushō during the late Muromachi and early Sengoku periods.  He was the fifteenth head of the Rusu clan based at Iwakiri Castle in the environs of Sendai in Mutsu Province.  According to one theory, he was the fourteenth head of the clan.

Kunimune was born as the fifth son of Date Tokimune, the eleventh head of the Date clan.

After a dispute between Rusu Mochiie (the thirteenth head of the Rusu clan) and Mochiie’s natural son, Rusu Mitsuie, Kunimune was received from the Date clan by the Rusu who sought their backing and became the next head of the clan.

On 10/5 of Meiō 4 (1495), Kunimune died at Iwakiri Castle and was succeeded by his adopted son, Rusu Kagemune.
