In relation to the Sengoku period, bushō refers to hereditary rulers of clans known as sengoku daimyō who commanded bushi (family members serving in military roles) and ashigaru (local peasants and townspeople conscripted to serve as foot soldiers) as well as their retainers who served on behalf of their rulers in exchange for stipends and protection. Bushō were the central characters in the drama that unfolded during the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods.
