Nezu Motonao served as a bushō during the Sengoku period.

The Nezu clan were a kokujin, or provincial landowner, in Nezu in the Chiisagata District of Shinano Province.

In 1541, at the Battle of Unnotaira, he was defeated during an invasion of Chiisagata by Takeda Nobutora, the sengoku daimyō of Kai Province but submitted to the Takeda clan via Suwa Yorishige of the Suwa shintō, a band of bushi founded in the Kamakura period.  Motonao affiliated with Takeda Nobukado and received recognition of his rights to his fief.

According to an entry in a historical diary dated 12/15 of Tenbun 11 (1542),  Motonao’s daughter wed Nobutora’s eldest son, Takeda Harunobu (Shingen) as his consort and was called Nezu-goryōnin.  Another entry makes reference to a bridal procession for an individual from the Nezu.  Under one theory, this refers to Nezu-goryōnin, and, under another theory, this refers to the daughter of Suwa Yorishige named Suwa-goryōnin.

On 8/16 of Tenbun 22 (1553), he received 1,000 kanmon in northern Shinano.  Among Motonao’s sons, Katsunao died early so he was succeeded by his second son, Nezu Masanao.
